My grandmother was so full of spunk that even her own jokes would cause her to bubble over with contagious giggling. But as she aged, we were losing her stories before she was even gone. 

When a family member dies, it's like a library burns to the ground; all of their rich memories and wisdom vanish, living on only through us. We may have scattered photos and videos, but nothing that organizes their unique story. Additionally, many people fear being misunderstood — they may feel uneasy about what will happen to the family after they pass. I did exactly this myself. We made a feature documentary about my grandmother’s work as a local playwright in her final years. Watching it in theaters for the first time, our family laughed and cried together through the whole film. Now that I have my own children, this film is the only way they will experience my grandmother’s legacy.
